What Yarn to Use To Crochet A Bucket Hat?

Cotton, linen and raffia yarns are great choices for crocheting a bucket hat. They are breathable, durable and hold the bucket hat shape well. Choose worsted/aran weight yarn for a sturdier shape compared to lighter yarns. Find cotton yarn suggestions above in the materials and specifications section!

Crown of the Crochet Bucket Hat

The crown part of the crochet bucket hat is a crochet circle that has 5 rounds of dc stitches.

Round 1. Start with ‘growth’ (orange) color yarn. Make a magic ring and chain 3 (counts as one double crochet stitch (dc) from now on). Insert 11 dc stitches so that you include the tail end of the yarn to the ring. Close the round with a slip stitch (sl st) to the 3-ch stitch. Pull the tail end tightly so there’s no hole in the middle of the round. [a total of 12 stitches]

Round 2. Change to ‘crush’ (pink) color yarn. Ch 3 and insert 1 dc to the same stitch. These two stitches count as one dc increase (dc-inc). Insert 2 dc stitches to the next stitch (dc-inc). Insert 10 dc-inc. Close the round with a sl st to the 3-ch stitch. [24]

Round 3. Change the yarn color. Ch 3 and insert 1 dc to the same stitch. Insert 1 dc to the next stitch. *Insert 1 dc-inc, 1 dc.* Repeat * to the end of the round. Close the round with a sl st to the 3-ch stitch. [36]

Round 4. Change the yarn color. Ch 3 and insert 1 dc to the same stitch. Insert 1 dc to the next stitch and another dc to the next stitch. *Insert 1 dc-inc, 2 dc.* Repeat * to the end of the round. Close the round with a sl st to the 3-ch stitch. [48]

Round 5. Change the yarn color. Ch 3 and insert 1 dc to the same stitch. Insert 1 dc to the next stitch, another dc to the next stitch and third dc to the next stitch. *Insert 1 dc-inc, 3 dc.* Repeat * to the end of the round. Close the round with a sl st to the 3-ch stitch. [60]

Body of the Crochet Bucket Hat

7 rounds of dc stitches are crocheted in the body part of the crochet bucket hat. These rounds do not contain increases.

Rounds 6-12: Change color in every round. Ch 3, 59 dc. Close the round with a sl st to the 3-ch stitch. [60]

If you want to increase the height of the bucket hat, crochet one or two rounds more.

Brim of the Crochet Bucket Hat

6 rounds of single crochet (sc) stitches and 1 round of crab stitches (reverse single crochet stitch) are crocheted in the brim part of the crochet bucket hat.

Round 13: Change the yarn color. *Insert 2 sc to the same stitch (sc-inc) and 4 sc to the next stitches.* Repeat * to the end of the round. [72]

Round 14: Use the same yarn color. Insert 3 sc to the next stitches. *1 sc-inc, 5 sc.* Repeat * until there are 3 stitches left in the round. Insert 1 sc-inc, 2 sc. [84]

Round 15: Change the yarn color. *Insert 1 sc-inc, 6 sc.* Repeat * to the end of the round. [96]

Round 16: Use the same yarn color. Insert 4 sc to the next stitches. *1 sc-inc, 7 sc.* Repeat * until there are 4 stitches left in the round. Insert 1 sc-inc, 3 sc. [108]

Round 17: Change the yarn color. *Insert 1 sc-inc, 8 sc.* Repeat * to the end of the round. [120]

Round 18: Use the same yarn color. Insert 5 sc to the next stitches. *1 sc-inc, 9 sc.* Repeat * until there are 5 stitches left in the round. Insert 1 sc-inc, 4 sc. [132]

Round 19: Use the same yarn color. Finish the brim by inserting crab stitches (reverse single crochet stitches) along the edge. Alternatively, you can insert slip stitches instead of crab stitches if you are not familiar with the crab stitch. [132]

Cut the yarn and weave in all the ends.

  1. Are you just crocheting in the round for the brim? No more chaining and slip stitching?

    • Hi! Correct. 🙂 I move on straight to the first stitch of the previous round without inserting a slip stitch and a chain stitch.

  2. in round 14 are the first 3 sc in the same stitch or the first three stitches? thank you!

    • Hi Holly! Thank you for the great question! Each of the 3 sc are inserted to separate stitches 🙂 And after that, you’ll insert 1 sc-inc to the fourth stitch.

      -Heini

  3. Hi, I personally prefer to make the brim bigger. Maybe you could add this to the pattern?

    • Hi Cienna! Thank you for the great suggestion. 🙂 I like the idea too, I’ll definitely add it to the pattern soon!
