The crochet handbag is crocheted from the bottom to the handle. The bag is crocheted double-stranded which means you crochet with two yarn strands (both are different colors) at the same time.

Note: the single crochet stitches (sc) are crocheted as “X” or “cross” single crochet stitches (instead of the traditional “V”-shape single crochet stitches).

Here’s how you crochet an X-shape (cross) single crochet stitch: insert your hook through the stitch/loop, yarn under (place your hook over the yarn), pull yarn through, yarn over, pull yarn through the two loops on your hook.

Base and round 1: Chain 17. Starting from the second chain from your hook, insert 14 single crochet stitches (sc). Insert 3 sc to the next chain stitch. Continue crocheting the other side of the chain (don’t turn the work, you will crochet rounds): Insert 13 sc. Then, insert 4 sc to next stitch. This is the end of the round. There is a total of 34 sc in the round.

Rounds 2-9: Insert 34 sc. Place the progress keeper (stitch marker) to the first stitch in each round. This way you know when a new round starts.

Round 10: This is the first decrease round. Insert a single crochet decrease stitch (sc-dec) by crocheting two sc stitches together through front loops only. Insert 14 sc, 1 sc-dec, 14 sc, 1 sc-dec.

Round 11: This is the second decrease round. Insert 1 sc-dec. Then, insert 12 slip stitches (sl st), 2 sc-dec, 11 sl st. There will be 2 stitches left in the round. Start the bag handle next.

Bag handle: Insert 4 sc. Chain 1 and turn the work. The bag handle is worked in rows. *Insert 4 sc, chain 1 and turn the work.* Repeat * 17 more times. Sew the bag handle with a threading needle to the opposite side side of the bag. Join it with the two decrease stitches and the stitches next to both decrease stitches (a total of 4 stitches).

To finish the bag handle, turn it into a big “tube” by sewing the opposite edges of each row together.

Weave in the ends with a threading needle. You can also sew a snap button onto the inner sides of the bag.

I hope you got the cool girl moment with your new crochet handbag! I definitely got. 🙂 If you have any feedback, feel free to comment the crochet handbag pattern below!
