Sequin Knit Poncho Free Pattern Introduction
- Sizes: XXS-3XL (XXS-XS, S-M, L-XL, 2XL-3XL).
- Skill level: Beginner-friendly.
- Tools: Circular knitting needles 7 mm 40 cm or 60 cm.
A 3,5-4,5 mm crochet hook or a tapestry needle for seaming the panels together. - Yarn: Lana Grossa Cosmo sequin yarn in color ‘desert yellow’ (09). The color options are amazing so check them out! For sewing the edges together with a tapestry needle, you need basic sport weight cotton yarn of the same color as your sequin yarn. This is because I found it challenging to thread the stitches with sequin yarn. If you can crochet, you can also seam the edges together with single crochet stitches using sequin yarn.
- Substitute yarns: Find substitute yarn suggestions below (remember to check the gauge and the weight):
- Sandnes Garn Paljett sequin yarn
- We are Knitters Dancing Queen yarn
- Wolle Halle paillettengarn
- Hobbii Moonlace yarn
- Pru Yarns Unicorn Tears
- Yardage (Lana Grossa Cosmo yarn):
- For sizes XXS-M: 260 m / 284 yds (100 g / 3.5 oz)
- For sizes L-3XL: 520 m / 568 yds (200 g / 7 oz).
- Gauge: 11-12 stitches and 22 rows in 10 cm (4″) in stockinette stitch.
- Fit: Positive ease. The poncho stretches a lot.
- Measurements: Since the poncho stretches a lot, exact measurements are challenging to take. The measurements for one panel without stretching are:
- XXS-XS: ~70×25 cm (~28×10″). The first one is the width and the second one is the height.
- S-M: ~75×30 cm (~30×12″)
- L-XL: ~80×35 cm (~32×14″)
- 2XL-3XL: ~85×40 cm (~34×16″)

Knit Poncho Free Pattern Instructions
The knit poncho consists of two identical rectangles that are knitted with stockinette stitch. That’s it!
Cast on 72(78, 84, 90) stitches on 7 mm circular knitting needles.
Row 1. Slip 1 stitch purlwise. Purl the rest of the stitches.
Row 2. Slip 1 stitch knitwise. Knit the rest of the stitches.
Repeat the rows 1-2 a total of 24(30, 36, 42) more times. Then, repeat the row 1 one more time. The panel has 49(61, 73, 85) rows.
Cast off the stitches loosely so that the edge wouldn’t be too tight. The ‘cast on’ edge will anyway be very elastic.
Make another rectangle following the same instructions.

Construction and Seaming of the Knit Poncho
Place the rectangles as shown in the poncho layout photo below.

Seam the edges together (the seams are shown in the photo below). Choose one of the shoulders and continue seaming additional 5-10 cm (2-4″) further (see the thinner red zigzag seams in the photo below). Make sure the panels are the wrong side (purl side) out so that the seam will be placed on the wrong side of the poncho.
Sew the edges together using a tapestry needle and the same colored cotton yarn as your sequin yarn. This is because I found it challenging to sew with the sequin yarn as the yarn didn’t easily go through the edge stitches.
If you can crochet you can also seam the edges together using single crochet stitches as I did for the poncho in the photos. Then it’s easier to use the sequin yarn for seaming.

Weave in the ends. Turn the knit poncho right side out.
Enjoy your new knit sequin poncho and be ready to get compliments on it!
